System Overview

A basic MicroLogix 1500 system consists of a base unit that provides 24 or 28 built-in basic I/O, a built-in ac or dc power supply, and a processor module that slides into the base unit. You can supplement the I/O built into the base unit with up to sixteen digital and/or analog input and output 1769 Compact™ I/O modules (depending on current draw and power dissipation). Add an optional memory and/or real-time clock module or an optional Data Access Tool to enhance system capability.

System Components MicroLogix 1500 system components include: ·

Processor (1764 -LRP or -LSP, required)-The MicroLogix 1500 processor is a separate module that slides into the base unit. The processor houses a keyless mode switch and two built-in 3/4-turn analog trim potentiometers with a digital output range from 0 to 250. The processor also provides the interface for optional real-time clock and memory modules, and for the Data Access Tool.

· Base Unit (required)-Each MicroLogix 1500 system requires a base unit. The base unit includes embedded I/O and power supply, and provides space for installation of the processor. Three base units are available, each with a different configuration of built-in I/O:

  • 1764-24AWA -Twelve 120V ac inputs and twelve relay outputs, 120V ac power.
  • 1764-24BWA -Twelve 24V dc inputs and twelve relay outputs, 120V ac power.
  • 1764-28BXB-Sixteen 24V dc inputs and six DC FET plus six relay outputs, 24V dc power.

· Compact I/O Modules (1769 series, optional)-Choose from a variety of digital and analog input and output modules. Up to 16 modules can be connected to the MicroLogix 1500 base unit, depending on current draw and power dissipation. Individual modules install to the right of the base unit, or up to 3 feet away through use of an expansion cable (1769-CRRx,-CLLx, or-CRLx) and power supply (1769-PA2, -PA4, -PB2, or -PB4). An end cap (1769-ECR for a right end or 1769-ECL for a left end), or one end of an expansion cable, is required at each end of each bank of Compact I/O modules.

· Real-Time Clock and Memory Modules (optional)-Real-time clock and memory modules provide memory backup, a real-time clock, or both. Real-time clock data can be accessed by user programs. The real-time clock can be synchronized with an external time source via a program instruction. Three modules are available: o 1764-MM1RTC-8K-word combination memory and real-time-clock. o 1764-MM2RTC-16K-word combination memory and real-time-clock. o 1764-MM1-8K-word memory only. o 1764-MM2-16K-word memory only. o 1764-RTC-Real-time-clock only.

· Data Access Tool (1764-DAT, optional)-The Data Access Tool allows monitoring and adjustment of user-defined integer and bit data. It provides 48 “electronic push buttons,” 48 “electronic digital trim potentiometers,” and two function keys. The Data Access Tool can be inserted into or removed from the controller while the system is running, allowing on-line data adjustments. The x in catalog numbers 1769-CRRx and 1769-CRLx stands for the number 1 (a one-foot cable) or 3 (a 3-foot cable).

Product Design

The MicroLogix 1500 system is designed for ease of installation and maintenance. The base units and Compact I/O modules include finger-safe terminal blocks, and both can be either DIN-rail or panel mounted. The base unit or any I/O module can be removed and installed individually, or the entire system can be removed or installed as a unit.

Two MicroLogix 1500 processor modules are available. The standard processor (1764-LSP) provides up to 7.65K words of configurable user memory with a maximum user data space size of 4K words. The enhanced processor (1764-LRP) provides up to 14K words of configurable user memory with a maximum user data space size of 4K words.

You can create long-integer data files (32-bit signed integer, ± 2 billion) for use with math and embedded high-speed I/O instructions. You can also create floating point data files, each of which can contain up to 256 IEEE-754 floating point data elements.

The MicroLogix 1500 processes a typical 1K-word user program (including bit, timer, counter, and math instructions) in approximately 1ms, and it includes built-in resources to facilitate application development:

· Built-in and Modular I/O-The base unit has 24 or 28 built-in I/O. You can add up to 16 I/O modules to support hundreds of I/O points, depending on your power requirements (new 32-point modules available).

· Selectable Timed Interrupt-The selectable timed interrupt (STI) provides a mechanism to solve time-critical control requirements in, for example, PID or motion applications. The STI is a trigger mechanism that lets the controller interrupt the program on a user-defined basis to gather time-sensitive data or initiate outputs.

· Event Input Interrupts-The MicroLogix 1500 controller supports up to 4 event input interrupts, each of which lets the controller scan a specific program file (subroutine) when an input condition is detected from a sensor. These four input interrupts are assignable to any of the eight high-speed inputs. Eight latching or pulse catch inputs allow very brief signals to be captured and held for input processing.

· High-Speed Counters-The MicroLogix 1500 controller (using the 1764-24BWA or -28BXB base unit) includes two built-in independent high-speed counters operating at up to 20kHz, using 32-bit integers for extended range. The high-speed counter instructions support asynchronous control of outputs.

· Programmable Limit Switch Function-The Programmable Limit Switch function allows you to configure the high-speed counter to operate as a programmable limit switch or rotary cam switch.

· Pulse Train and Pulse Width Modulation Outputs-The MicroLogix 1500 controller (using the 1764-28BXB base unit) includes two outputs each of which can be configured as either a high-speed pulse train output (PTO) operating at up to 20kHz or a high-speed pulse width modulated (PWM) output. Trapezoidal and S Curve profiles on PTO outputs allow user-controlled acceleration and deceleration. Both instructions use 32-bit integers for extended range.

· Trim Potentiometers-Two built-in 3/4-turn analog trim potentiometers with a digital output (range from 0 to 250) allow quick and easy adjustments of timers, counters, set points, and more.

Communication

RS-232-C-The built-in RS-232-C port supports DF1 full-duplex, DF1 half-duplex slave, new DH1 half-duplex master, DH-485, Modbus RTU slave and new Modbus RTU master protocols, report-by-exception, and peer-to-peer data exchange. This port can be used for direct connection of programming and operator interface devices (e.g. a personal computer), and supports dial-in remote programming.

ASCII-A full ASCII command set for the RS-232-C port allows read and write with ASCII devices.

Modbus-Through its RS-232-C port, use a MicroLogix 1500 system as a smart RTU slave in an existing SCADA network (Modbus master available late 2003).

DH-485-You can connect the MicroLogix 1500 controller RS-232-C port to a DH-485 network through an Advanced Interface Converter (catalog number 1761-NET-AIC). The DH-485 network may connect up to 32 devices. The communication port provides for program upload and download.

New DF1 Radio Modem protocol-You can transmit data through DF1 Radio Modem protocol, an efficient way to transmit data. Each read/write transaction requires only one TX from initiator and one TX from the responder, so “key-ups” and power consumption are minimized. DeviceNet-You can connect the MicroLogix 1500 controller RS-232-C port to a DeviceNet network of up to 64 devices through a DeviceNet Interface (catalog number 1761-NET-DNI). The

DeviceNet Interface provides slave I/O, peer-to-peer, COS (change-of-state), and program upload/download capability. The MicroLogix 1500 processor supports backplane messaging, which allows the processor to read or write data to other devices on DeviceNet. Finally, you can also use the 1769-SDN Device Net Scanner for DeviceNet master capabilities including messaging, program upload/download and monitoring.

EtherNet/IP-You can connect the MicroLogix 1500 controller to an EtherNet/IP network through an EtherNet/IP-to-RS-232-C interface (catalog number 1761-NET-ENI). This module supports program monitoring and upload/download, data collection, and controller peer-to-peer communication. It can also send e-mail messages via SMTP and display status and configuration information through a built-in Internet server.

Operator interfaces-Many Allen-Bradley operator interface products can be used with MicroLogix 1200 controllers. The PanelView 300 Micro operator interface is a small, low cost, easy-to-use operator interface that is designed for use with the MicroLogix 1200 controller.
